Portal Description    (1)

A first pass at creating a page where Bloomer development can be coordinated. In the beginning, the only resources we have are those associated with Semantic MediaWiki. As progress is made, we will gain access to IBIS conversations, though we have the option to drop an instance of Debategraph into this platform and use it now. This page is being edited using the Rich Editor extension.    (1A)

Big Picture    (2)

Bloomer is a prototype project aimed at creating an open source collective intelligence, global sensemaking platform. We have chosen MediaWiki as the core user experience (UX) platform since it is robust, reliable, scalable, and, most importantly, enjoys wide brand and interface recognition. We are extending the core wiki with several off-the-shelf extensions, including Semantic MediaWiki, WikiTrust, Purple numbers, and a few others. We included specific extensions for integration of OpenSocial gadgets for enhanced interface capabilities.    (2A)

We are experimenting with the use of namespaces as an organizational mechanism. For instance, we are using the Widget namespace for the Google Gadget extension, Utility for our first Google Gadget, one that displays clouds and sunlight over a Google map of the planet. We will be using the Topic namespace for topics created in this wiki, and, as suggested below, we are using the Conversation namespace for our early use of this wiki as a collaboration platform. Namespaces will allow us to explore the use of templates for uniformity of page layouts.    (2B)

We are using the Portal namespace to identify front pages for portals we will create in this prototype in order to develop the platform's capabilities. Portals we expect to be adding soon are these:    (2C)

Tasks    (4)

The following tasks represent a prototype project. Future tasks will add functions and features to these, and will add further extensions to the Bloomer collaboration suite.    (4A)

  • Prime task: create the core extension that allows MediaWiki to converse with the Federation Server. This is presently envisioned as an OpenSocial gadget that could be used by other platforms, e.g. Drupal, Wordpress, and others    (4A1)
  • Create a new tab for MediaWiki: Explore, which, when selected, displays the results of a query to the Federation Server that amounts to showing everything known to the federation platform about the subject displayed on the wiki page.    (4A2)
  • Create an IBIS extension for MediaWiki that allow users to conduct IBIS conversations directly from within the wiki. Each node in an IBIS conversation is its own page in the wiki.    (4A3)
  • Create a Drill-Down navigation OpenSocial Gadget and MediaWiki extension to drive it. This will support a variety of portal activities, including IBIS conversations.    (4A4)
  • Create the TopicSpaces prototype. (Federation Server)    (4A5)

The following tasks are to be conducted as soon as the prototype is completed.    (4B)

Conversations    (6)

For now, simply create a new page using the Conversation namespace. Give the page a simple title, not too long, not overly descriptive, but unique in the entire wiki (e.g. Conversation:IBISquestion--type the chosen string into the search bar at the left and click Go). Once a page is created, be sure to save it, then return here and add the link to the conversation below, as illustrated with a demonstration conversation.
